The monastery of Afkule, which translates into English as "Tower of Forgiveness", located near Fethiye and three kilometers from the village of Kayakoy, is one of the main attractions of the region. The monastery Af Kule, is an ancient structure, hewn out from the very top of a steep rock.

According to legend, in the 11th century a monk named Ayios Eleftherios discovered this beautiful and remote place. He decided that it would be a very good place to worship God, and therefore, using only the simplest of tools, he began to build a small monastery on an area of 10 square meters next to a steep slope, the monastery being partially carved into the rocks. It is said that by constructing the monastery, he was offering repentance before God in complete solitude: it was here that the monk lived the remaining years of his life, as he continued the construction of the monastery.

The monastery itself has two floors. On the first floor you can observe a rectangular room to the left of which is a rainwater collection tank. The inner staircase leads to the upper floor. There are two rooms here, the first of which resembles a hall.  A little below the monastery is a building constructed by the monk's followers after his death. Not far from the monastery are the ruins of the chapel, in which only parts of the walls were preserved, and the roof and aspidum (arch) are no longer extant.

From the terrace of the monastery, there is a truly breathtaking view of Fethiye's landmarks - Cape Kurdoglu and Iblis. And if you climb here in clear weather, you can even see the island of Rhodes.

Af Kule is easy to find - go by car from Fethiye towards Kayakoy, then go towards Gemiler, following the signs. Continuing along the forest road, after a while you will see a sign to Af Kule, where you turn onto a dirt road. You will have to leave your car a few hundred meters into the forest, and then go on foot. There are red and yellow stripes on stones every few metres, marking the path to Af Kule.
